Attention:
New report template can be downloaded from here. (You might need to right-click and choose "Save" command depending on your system.) The sample pdf file is also provided here.
- Please, do not change any format provided in the template. All changes will be overwritten! Thus, your final report in the book may not look as you expect to see.
- Change the filename accordingly, i.e. first-letter of your first name and then underscore followed by your surname.
- Do the same with your photo. You are advised to use a photo of resolution 300dpi and of dimension 1in x 1.25in. Lower resolution photos, e.g. 75dpi, provides a sufficient quality for electronic copy but as you all know, we will publish them as a book. So a better quality is required for the printed material!
- Name your graphic files accordingly, as n_surname_1.jpg, n_surname_2.jpg, n_surname_2.jpg, etc.
- You might use Turkish characters in your document (with current packages)!
- Mathematics Subject Classification and keywords can be obtained from AMS.
March 4, 2009.
- New: Upon your request, I uploaded the slides of the seminar.
- Posters: You may (and you should) use BEAMER for preparing posters. See below for details.
Aim
In the Spring semester of 2008-2009 academic year, "Math 398-Research Project" and "Math 452-Applied Workshop in Mathematics II" students will prepare their projects using guidelines presented here.
Deadlines
- all project reports should be submitted in their final version on May 15, 2009.
- before the submission of the reports, project advisor MUST approve your report!
- presentations will be on May 30, Saturday beginning at 09:30 in C101.
Schedule will be later.
- posters will be posted by May 25, Monday and will stay on boards for a week.
There will be a poster session which will be announced later (most probably on May 29 or May 30).
- Update: there will be "Opening Ceremony" and poster session for applied workshop projects at 16:00 tomorrow (May 26, Tuesday).
- New Update: Schedule for presentations is given below.

Tools
Project reports have to be written in LaTeX. A (very tiny) short introduction (guide) is avaliable here. Be warned: LaTeX is deep! But only a small portion is required to write articles in standard format.
PRESENTATION: You are strongly advised to use package BEAMER for preparing their presentations. An example of a presentation can be found at sourceforge project site. (Hint: Use Ctrl-L to use fullscreen pdf mode to see the presentation at work!) This one is also interesting and informative.
(Hint: Check the file generic-ornate-15min-45min.en.tex after installing beamer and use it as a template! It has lots of comments on the usage. The default path is "C:\Program Files\MiKTeX 2.7\tex\latex\beamer\solutions\generic-talks" but it actually depends on your system.)
POSTER: Math 452 students are also advised to use LaTeX for preparing their posters. A similar package for posters is beamerposter whose help can be found here. This site also includes a professional example. Your poster should be greater than A2 and preferably of size A1. You are free to use custom sizes.
If you do not want to use LaTeX, then here are your other possibilities:
- Scientific Word or Workplace. Note that there is a 30-days free evaluation copy, but after 30 days you have to buy a license.
- LyX - Document Processor (a WYSIWYM editor), it is also opensource and free! For more information, click here.
- WebLaTeX - For those who do not want to install LaTeX on their computers or want to use their .tex files on a foreign system. (Basic knowledge of LaTeX is assumed.)
Note that these two alternatives, can produce LaTeX files. And it is our intention to use those files, not the original copies of the programs using!
Important:We are planning to prepare a book from your reports, and we certainly want all reports to follow the same structure. For this reason, we want LaTeX file and it is of your responsibility to check any system/program compatibility.
Grading
Project grades will be evaluated according to the following system:
- A student will get NA from the project if (s)he does not contact his/her supervisor within the first two weeks of the semester without an official excuse.
- A student will get NA from the project if (s)he does not meet with his/her supervisor regularly.
- Total grade will be evaluated using the distribution
| Regular Meetings (Attendance) | 25% |
| Project Report (Supervisor) | 45% |
| Presentation (Committee) | 30% |
and then, converted to letter grade according to table
| Total Grade | Letter |
| 90-100 | AA |
| 85-89 | BA |
| 80-84 | BB |
| 75-79 | CD |
| 70-74 | CC |
| 65-69 | DC |
| 60-64 | DD |
| 50-59 | FD |
